How To Encourage Your Kids To Brush Their Teeth

Teeth brushing seems like such a chore when you're young. You aren't worried about cavities, tooth decay, tooth loss, or other damage that can be caused from improper brushing. This worry falls on the shoulders of the parents. You can't give up though, you have to keep encouraging your kids to brush and instill the importance of good oral health. The best way to do this is to set a good example. If they see you taking good care of your teeth and going to the dentist often for checkups and exams, they will follow your lead. See below for other ways to help encourage your kids to brush.

Make It Competitive

If you have more than one child, make a competition out of brushing, such as who can brush for longer or create the most bubbles from brushing. If you only have one child, brush with them so they have a competitor. Be sure to watch that they get all of their teeth brushed. The winner gets a new toothbrush, or gets to choose the next flavor of toothpaste.

Let Your Kids Choose Their Toothbrush

Allow your kids to choose their own toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and other dental tools. There are a number of different toothbrushes on the market sporting different characters on them. There's something for everyone from Star Wars to Barbie. Even the toothpaste has characters on them. Allow your child to choose their own to help get them excited about brushing.

Set A Timer

You should brush twice daily for two minutes (no matter your age), so set a timer for your child to be sure they are brushing for the entire two minutes. Look for tooth brushing apps that have timers to help your child brush, and that also have their favorite characters as well.

Reward Good Brushing

Reward their good behavior and brushing with something such as stickers, or a special treat such as choosing what to do or where to eat on the next family outing. Rewarding your child may give them a little extra incentive to do a great job, in addition to having a cavity free mouth.

Set An Example

As stated above, setting a good example is a great way to encourage your kids. Brush with your child daily so they see not just how to do it, but that you also have to brush daily. Allow your child to brush your teeth to make it a little more fun. When it's time to go to the dentist, allow your child to be in the exam room with you to see your teeth getting cleaned by the dentist as well.

Encourage your kids to brush their teeth and teach them about the importance of good oral health. Help your child brush and take them to the dentist for checkups and exams every 6 months. Check with a dental office like Sunnyside Dentistry for Children for more information.
