Dental Implants Vs. Dentures: Which Option Is Better For Your Mouth?

Having a mouth full of healthy teeth is a must. Not only will having healthy teeth ensure that you can chew your food correctly, but it also ensures that you look presentable as well. When you have a few missing teeth or even a chipped tooth, it can make your appearance look more disheveled than it would otherwise. If you have recently found out that you need to have a tooth pulled (either due to infection or injury), then you may be wondering what options you have to make your smile look better. Two of the options that you have available to you are dental implants and dentures. But what are the differences between these two things? This article will take a closer look.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an excellent option for patients who only have one or two missing teeth because they are individual prostheses. The process of getting dental implants itself is fairly lengthy compared to other ones. To start out, your dentist will implant a metal rod into the gums where your tooth was pulled. After the metal rod has been placed, it's then time for your gums to heal, which typically takes a few months. If they have recovered well, your dentist will then put a porcelain crown over the top of the rod, and the process is complete! The great thing about dental implants is that they last a long time, and the dental crown can be matched to your existing teeth so that they blend in well.

Dentures

Dentures are for people who have a lot of missing teeth or who suffer from frequent cavities. If you keep having to have a tooth pulled because you are prone to severe oral infections, then dentures may be the way to go. Dentures are a set of artificial teeth that are placed over gums. In order for you to get dentures, all of your teeth will have to be pulled so that they have something to rest on. One of the benefits of dentures is that you can take them out at night, which can be comfortable for a lot of patients.

These are just two of the options that you have to replace missing teeth in your mouth. If you are interested in learning a little bit more about the options that are available to you, reach out to a dentist in your area.
